DESCRIPTION:The Women Build Committee has selected Jane Hagedorn as honoree for the 11th Women Build home located in the Peninsula neighborhood at 780 Barber Place\, Iowa City. Men are welcome to build with us as “MENtors” while we focus on empowering women. \nWe have all of the training\, tools and equipment you need and we will teach you everything you need to know to help us complete this affordable home alongside the qualified\, first-time homebuyer. \nConstruction site age restrictions: All volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Those under 18 must have parent/guardian consent to participate on an active construction site. Sixteen and 17 year old youth cannot use power tools and cannot get more than 6 feet off the ground. If you are under 18\, it is best to contact the volunteer coordinator in advance to determine the tasks that will be completed during your shift. \nClothing: Wear comfortable\, layered\, weather appropriate clothing. DESCRIPTION:People pay Federal and State taxes when they have gain/profit on the sale of investment property. However\, in an even trade (or if the investor trades their investment property in for more-expensive property) there is no income/profits which could be used to pay taxes. \nUnder some circumstances\, investors can use a “Section 1031 exchange” to defer taxes on gains they earn from investment property; however\, the IRS restricts these types of exchanges to “like-kind” property\, and also establishes conditions (required actions\, property value thresholds\, time deadlines\, etc.) which must be met in order to qualify for tax deferral. \nKey topics we’ll discuss include: \n\nWhy an investor would use a Section 1031 exchange\nMechanics of several types of Section 1031 exchanges\nWays to avoid common pitfalls during the 1031 process to maximize an investor’s chances to defer taxes on a purchase/sale of investment property.\n\n\nKarl Sigwarth is an attorney in Bradley and Riley\, PC’s Iowa City office with a practice focused on transactional (real estate and corporate) law.  A graduate of Harvard Law School\, Karl has a great deal of experience with real estate transactions and is looking forward to talking with the group. DESCRIPTION:The Iowa City Area HBA’s Legislative Committee typically meets every other month on the third Tuesday from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. \nThe committee recommends policies to the association on legislative\, regulatory and legal matters. It tracks and monitors issues\, explores options on ways to deal with them and connects with local officials and legislative leaders. The committee endorses candidates for local elections and actively recruits candidates for boards and commissions. It also discusses strategies and methods of advocating to gain the best possible results for HBA members. DESCRIPTION:Due to increasing COVID numbers\, the Home Show Committee made the very tough decision to cancel the in person show and go entirely virtual again this year. \nThe Virtual Home Show has been moved to February 28 – March 4 to give the exhibitors more time to create their videos and write ups. \nThe Home Show magazine will be published in the Gazette and distributed to area businesses February 27. \nThe Opening Home Show on CBS 2 KGAN will air February 26 at 6:30 pm. It will then be uploaded to the Home Show website\, the HBA website and our YouTube channel Feb. 27. \nMore than 2\,100 users visited The Home Show website over 3\,000 times for 7\,642 page views. Not bad for our first year and we’re expecting higher numbers this year as we’ll advertise on tv\, radio\, newsprint and social media. \nComplete the 2022 Home Show Virtual Home Show Application and send it to Karyl@hbaofic.org to get in the Virtual Home Show today!
